When you’re running a successful business, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day management of your organization and forget about the people who make it all possible. As you grow, you’ll find it harder to stay connected to your receptionists and new starters and become a faceless leader. But there are ways to overcome that. Below, we’ve rounded up some of the best ways to show your employees that you truly care about their work…
Host regular meetings and conferences
Although businesses are increasingly turning to virtual meetings and catch-ups to cut costs and save time, having a physical get-together with your team once a month is a good idea, as you’ll be able to put names to faces and get to know people. Whether you’re reviewing your performance or celebrating a big client win, there are lots of ways you can get together.
Shadow your workers for an hour
Do you really know what Jane in PR does? A good way to get back to basics and show your staff that you care about their roles is to shadow your workers for an hour or two, getting to know exactly what their day-to-day workload involves. It’s easy to lose sight of these things, and honing in on one member of staff a week or month can give you some food for thought.
Invest in your premises
If you’re not taking good care of your business premises, your staff will feel undervalued and underappreciated. Work with an FM provider who can deliver services such as cleaning and grounds maintenance, and think about additional services such as workplace design that could further boost productivity and job satisfaction. These investments pay for themselves.
Respect their personal lives
A good leader will be able to support their employees’ personal lives whilst getting the most out of them when they’re at work. Where possible, allow staff to take time off for birthdays, funerals, illnesses, and holidays, and be compassionate – ask them if you can help them, offer to give them some more flexibility if they have children or other commitments, and be a human before you’re a boss. Would Tom starting 15 minutes late really make a difference?
Say thank you
When a member of staff delivers a great piece of work or secures a new client, make sure you go out of your way to thank them for their efforts. You don’t need to buy them a bottle of wine (though that always helps!) – a quick thank you note is often enough of a boost.
Surprise them!
When did you last bring a cake to the office or organise a party to celebrate an employee’s work anniversary? Make time to surprise your staff and give them something back for all of the hard work and effort they give to you. Little acts of kindness don’t have to cost much money, but they can make a big difference to employee morale and your reputation!
